- Before the hijackers finally took the flight to Kandahar, they forced it to land at three other locations, one of which was Raja Sansi Airport in Amritsar, India. The pilot had hoped that this would give Indian authorities time to take action. After that, the plane was also landed in Pakistan and then in the UAE for various reasons, before it was ultimately taken to Kandahar, Afghanistan on the fourth landing.
- The reason behind this hijacking was to secure the release of members of the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, who were imprisoned in Indian jails, including Masood Azhar.
- The flight was carrying a total of 191 people, including 15 crew members, 171 passengers, and 5 hijackers. Among them, one passenger lost their life and 17 others were injured. The passengers on that flight and the entire country remained in shock from December 24 to December 31, 1999.
